Umbria’s Wine Scene: Cantina Goretti

Follow the white road that leads you out of Perugia city and there, you will find Cantina Goretti; a family Estate that’s been making wine since the early 1900’s.

As you turn into the estate your eyes will be guided way, way up, toward the skies. There, lies an impeccably restored tower originally from the 14th century. This is the flagship of the Goretti Estate and is showcased on many of their wine labels.

The Goretti family exudes their love for Umbria and all that the territory has to offer. If you get the chance to visit, you will surely meet at least two generations of Goretti, but most likely three, since Nonna Marcella loves to mingle and joyously lingers around the wine barrels ready to showcase her family’s products.

After consistently producing well-made wines of Perugia for decades, the Goretti family decided to invest in the Montefalco region, which has been gaining International popularity due to its indigenous grape: Sagrantino.

In the early 2000’s the family successfully established a state-of-the art winery and well-producing vineyards. The Sagrantino di Montefalco D.O.C.G. has been a welcomed addition to the family’s long lineage of Colli Perugini D.O.C. wines and compliments the other reds in their portfolio very nicely.

The two regions’ contrasting soil types give the wine enthusiast great insight into the incredibly diverse production zones within Umbria.

The L’Arringatore is Goretti’s signature red wine, named after a historical statue that was discovered in one of the family’s vineyards. L’Arringatore means: ‘the speaker’ and the statue now rests in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, but you can see a replica when entering the Goretti Tower heading towards the tasting room and ancient cellar. The family calls this wine their ‘Super Umbrian’ - a nod to their neighbours’ in the north-west: ‘Super Tuscan’.

Cantina Goretti is the first wine estate outside of Perugia, which brings many visitors to their tasting room year round. When you come for a visit, make sure you book a cooking class and lunch where you’ll learn all of Nonna's secrets in the kitchen and later hop in their private helicopter to discover the brilliant landscape that encompasses Umbria.
